Know about Curtains and their Uses

A curtain is a piece of cloth used to block or obscure light, drafts, or water (as in the case of a shower curtain). Sometimes these curtains are known as drapes or draperies in the United States. The curtains which are hung over the doorways are known as portieres. The curtains which are hung inside of a building's window are known as draperies. These curtains are used to block the passage of light (not allows the light to enter the house or stops the light from escaping), gives privacy and acts as an insulator. Curtains are available in wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors, styles and patterns.

Curtains can be differentiated according to the ability of cleaning, deterioration of ultraviolet light, retention of oil and dust, noise absorption, fire resistance, and life span etc,. Curtains can be controlled by hand, with cords, by press-button pads or remote-controlled computers. The size and shape of the curtain depends on the size of the window as well as the type of the window.

Another type of curtain called window blind that can be fixed inside or outside a house. These window blinds helps reduce the temperature in the house. However, we can say that curtains are one of the accessories of interior decoration.

There are many uses of curtains:
  • You can change the look of your home by adapting curtains.
  • Curtains block entry of direct sun light into. It regulates the sunlight coming in to the house.
  • Facilitates cool temperatures.
  • Covers ugly walls and wall papers.
  • It acts as decorative piece.
  • It gives a aesthetic and pleasing appeal.
  • Curtains can be used as a partition or a divider between the rooms of a house.
  • Used for privacy reasons( it doesn't allow outsiders to see the interior of home).
