Pedodontics is a branch of dentistry which not only deals with the medical care of infants, children and adolescents but also the psychological management of the child, and the disease causality and prevention. It deals with the age group of people around 1-16 years.

The pedodontist or pediatrician is a medical practitioner who specializes in this area and focuses on giving treatment to the children. Pedodontist can also be named as a primary care physician and his services are devoted to the children. The pedodontist is also trained in implementing steps on prevention of dental caries and guiding the children on measures of proper eruption of permanent teeth.

Dentistry not only treats the children having dental problems from birth through adolescence but also focuses on a wide spectrum of conditions affecting dental development in youth. The services of this dentistry include fillings, extractions and preventative treatments.
The pediatric and regular dentistry differ in the aspect that the pediatric dentistry emphasizes on instilling the trust and confidence of children in their dentists. Most children will suffer from common ailments like tooth decay and dental cavities. And mainly pedodontist focuses on preventing tooth decay.

Many people believe that there is no need of taking oral hygiene for the baby teeth until permanent teeth arrive. However, children who do not maintain good oral hygiene habits, especially when baby teeth are still in place, statistically do not show improvement in their habits once the baby teeth fall out and the permanent ones replace them.

Also, many patients with special dental care problems, regardless of age, usually seek dental care from a pedodontist too.
